FAQ's
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a collaboration between the client and the therapist where each has a role to play. The client uses their imagination to unlock negative thought patterns within their subconscious while I act as a guide by using my knowledge, skills and experience to help you reach your therapy goals.
Why Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH)?
CBH is a carefully-crafted combination of two advanced therapeutic techniques: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and hypnotherapy. Through CBH, we can reprogramme our subconscious minds to create a lasting transformation and improve our quality of life.
Does hypnotherapy really work?
There is plenty of scientific evidence available showing the effectiveness of hypnotherapy. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the NHS recommend hypnotherapy in the treatment of anxiety and depression, and there is also strong evidence that CBH can help with many other conditions such as panic attacks, phobias, sleep problems and stress-related conditions.
Are you controlling my mind?
Hypnotherapy is an amazingly powerful tool that allows someone to move into a relaxed and more suggestible mindset. The client is always in control of their hypnotic experience and they become hypnotised to the extent they want to. It is absolutely not mind control; it’s a skill individuals can master with practice rather than a state that just “happens”.
Do I need to be asleep when hypnosis takes place?
No, during each session you will need to be awake and listening to the guiding sound of my voice.
How many sessions will I need?
After our initial session I will let you know how many sessions we would need to get the best results. I normally recommend around 4-8 sessions to create lasting change, with regular check-ins to see where we’re at.
How do I know if CBH is right for me?
What should I expect from my first CBH session?
We will discuss your goals and desired changes you wish to make, as well as any previous therapy, medical health and lifestyle to work out the best treatment plan for you. I will then talk you through what to expect, your role in hypnotherapy and begin our sessions together. I use a range of techniques alongside hypnotherapy such as relaxation, coping skills when outside the therapy room, ACT and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
Alongside your sessions with me, I will occasionally ask you to take some time between sessions to practise skills we have learnt or listen to personalised recordings.
What should I expect from ongoing CBH sessions?
Each session is tailored to the needs of the individual client. However, during a typical appointment we will have an informal chat about any changes you’ve noticed between sessions and set the goals for the upcoming session. We might work on some relaxation or coping techniques before starting the hypnosis, which lasts between 20-30 minutes. Before finishing, we’ll review the session and how you’re feeling, and discuss things you can practise for next time (I often provide recordings and/or practical exercises for clients to use between sessions).
How quickly will I see results?
You should start seeing positive results almost straight away but this will vary from client to client, depending on your particular circumstances and how many sessions you need (to be agreed in our first session together).
